Endless Poetry by Alejandro Jodorowsky

Launched as an experiment in 2011, the Bucharest International Experimental Film Festival (28 March-2 April) has managed to thrive over the last few years, despite fierce competition from other spring film festivals and the dwindling number of cinemas in Romania’s capital. Over six days, the gathering will screen more than 50 features and short films exploring the experimental side of cinema.

, the festival will focus on the tagline of its seventh edition, “You Are Another Me”, a take on an ancient Mayan greeting, challenging the audience to an “exercise in empathy”. This edition has five international competitions: You Are Another Me (On Exile and Shifting Borderscapes), The Politics of the Body (The Performative Self), Searching for Transcendence (Spirituality in the Digital Age), The Alchemy of the Frame (Deconstructing the Image) and Cutting the Cord (Family Love and Its Discontents).

Among the festival’s highlights, there are several partnerships between the BIEFF and the major film gatherings in Berlin, Cannes and Rotterdam. From Berlin, the BIEFF brings some of the titles shown in February in the Berlinale Forum Expanded, grouped into a thematic section dubbed Nostalgia for the Future: Manufactured Histories. The BIEFF is showing several films from Rotterdam within the Painting with History programme, while Emotional Bodies, a line-up that explores anxiety, desire and solitude in the post-internet urbanscape, was created in partnership with the Cinedans Film Festival.

The Golden Shorts sidebar shows some of the most popular short films of 2016, including award winners from the Cannes, Venice, Locarno and Clermont-Ferrand Film Festivals. The event will come to a close on 2 April with the screening of Julian Rosefeldt’s Manifesto [+see also:

, in which actress Cate Blanchett plays 13 parts.

The BIEFF is organised by the Manekino Cultural Association.
