Thankfully, Spanish cinema is starting to venture out of its mainstream comfort zone and is increasingly daring to tread some less-travelled genre paths and explore more visceral storylines. Bajo la piel de lobo [+see also:

(lit. “Under the Wolf’s Skin”) could end up being a prime example of this; the film began principal photography in early March in Huesca and is about to wrap its shoot at other locations in Aragon and Asturias. The natural settings will have a crucial presence in the feature debut by Samu Fuentes, who has been lucky enough to be able to bank on a breathtaking trio of stars in the lead roles: the hunky Mario Casas (whose latest release was The Bar [+see also:

), and the movie tells the story of a lone hunter, the last remaining inhabitant of a remote town in the mountains. The only contact he has with other humans comes every spring, when the snow starts to melt and he heads down to the valley to trade his animal skins. When a woman enters his life, he will begin to feel new emotions and question his lone-wolf attitude: he will then have to choose between uncovering his vulnerability and giving in to his wild side.

In the words of the director (who has documentaries such as De Picasso, Gades y África and Miraflores under his belt), Bajo la piel de lobo “will be a sensory experience. Its characters will convey the scent that their bodies give off after all this physical exertion in the harsh environment, the reaction to the torrents of blood that come gushing out of a wounded animal, the suffering caused by hunger and thirst, the touch of another human being, and the physical reaction to their kisses and caresses in these bleak, icy surroundings. The main characters wander the open spaces in search of meaning in their lives, even though this may only be pure survival.”

This promising feature-length fiction debut was funded by Nasa Producciones and Orreaga Filmak in conjunction with the Huesca Tourism Office, the Regional Government of Aragon, the Principality of Asturias and TVE. Alfa Pictures will be in charge of its Spanish distribution.
