Romania sees a steady increase in theatrical releases

The Romanian National Film Center has recently published statistics that show a steady increase in the number of releases in local cinemas: there were 228 movies released in 2016. In 2015, 217 new films came out in Romania, and only 192 came out the previous year.

The market share of European films has increased drastically over the last few years. Even if 2016 brought fewer European features to Romanian cinemas than 2015 did (69 last year, as against 80 the previous year), the trend over the last five years makes the popularity of Continental cinema plain to see: in 2012, there were 48 European releases in Romania, and only 38 in 2013. The market share of European cinema was 19% in 2013, 24% in 2014, 37% in 2015 and 30% in 2016. The market share of American films decreased from 62% in 2013 to 51% in 2016, with the lowest presence, 47%, in 2015.
