- In its first session of the year, funding body has decided to invest a total of €1,060,000 in 13 projects, ten of which are predominantly Belgian dishes out a substantial pot of funds for its first session of 2017

Established in 2016, the funding body offers substantial financial support to national and international projects produced, co-produced and/or filmed in Brussels. In this first 2017 session, 13 projects will receive funding, including eight feature films. Among them is Troisièmes Noces by David Lambert, which is to star Bouli Lanners and Rachel Mwanza and be produced by Frakas (see news). Also chosen to receive backing is Duelles, Olivier Masset-Depasse’s new film, which is being produced by Versus. Filming will begin on 4 May with a cast led by little-known actors Veerle Baetens and Anne Coesens, joined by Mehdi Nebbou and Arieh Worthalter (see news).

Two fairly ambitious Flemish projects will also benefit from support. The first of these is Engel, a new film by Koen Mortier, which is being produced by Czar and co-produced by Anonymes Films, Tobina Film (France) and Graniet Film (the Netherlands). It’s an adaptation of a novel by Belgian writer Dimitri Verhulst (author of The Misfortunates, among other works), inspired by the story of the cyclist Frank Vandenbroucke. Jérémie Renier will play the leading role, supported by Aïssa Maïga and director Marion Hänsel (En amont du fleuve [+see also:

, Daens and Koko Flanel. The film centres around a series of events that left a deep impression on Belgian society: the saga of the Brabant killers. Niet Schienen is being produced by Eyeworks, with Les Films du Fleuve co-producing. will also be supporting Escapada, the first full-length film from Sarah Hirtt (her short film, Waiting for the Thaw, was included in the Cannes Cinéfondation selection in 2013), to be produced by Artemis Production, as well as Sanaa Azari’s documentary, Faites entrer les figurants, being co-produced by At-Prod and Iota Production.

A number of television productions have also won backing, including the second season of The Break, which is scheduled to begin filming this summer with Hélicotronc producing, Benjamin d’Aoust and Stéphane Bergmans on boardas writers and Matthieu Donckboth writing and directing.
