The Docu Rough Cut Boutique, a joint programme of the Sarajevo Film Festival and the Sofia-based Balkan Documentary Center (BDC) that is aimed at the development of new documentary projects, has announced its 2017 selection. It includes two films from Hungary, one from Croatia, one from Romania and a Hungarian-Romanian co-production.

"All five of our selected projects depict the human struggle of an individual against the imposed forces of change," says Rada Šešić, head of the Docu Rough Cut Boutique and Sarajevo's Documentary Competition programmer. "Most of the directors are newcomers who have made only short docs so far. Their projects show tremendous courage in dealing with controversial, provocative topics. Their eagerness to reach a wider audience and stir a swampy status quo in their respective environments deserves our deep respect, and we believe that our new, enriched format of Docu Rough Cut Boutique will enhance their chances to make powerful, compelling films.”

This year, the programme is introducing another module before the project's presentation in Sarajevo in August. The selected projects will be given tailor-made consultations and group feedback sessions on their rough-cut materials in Sofia from 21-25 June.

"The expansion of Docu RCB into two modules is an important step in the development of the workshop and presents a better opportunity for the successful completion of the films," says Martichka Bozhilova, head of the BDC. "In June 2017, we will welcome our participants for the first time in Sofia, Bulgaria. The focus will be the creative development of the story, but also the personal growth and challenges in front of the filmmakers themselves. This way, when they arrive in Sarajevo in August, the teams will be better prepared to face the industry at the CineLink Industry Days, and present their projects and themselves in the best possible manner. It’s critical to continue our practice of introducing upcoming documentaries at CineLink, as our results over the years have confirmed that this increases the overall competitiveness of the region."
