Fourteen projects have secured funding from South Tyrol’s IDM Film Commission following its second call of 2017; 11 of these are being backed at the production stage and the remaining three at the pre-production stage. . IFF is producing the movie with Vision Distribution, which will also take care of the film’s Italian release.

Another project from Italy, funded by IDM and currently in production, is a thriller TV series with the working title The Miracle. It is being produced by Wildside and directed by author Niccolò Ammaniti, whose books have been adapted for the big screen by such names as Marco Risi, Gabriele Salvatores and Bernardo Bertolucci. Ammaniti will direct alongside Lucio Pellegrini and Francesco Munzi. The cast (which is still provisional) may reportedly include Guido Caprino and Alba Rohrwacher. After months of stakeouts, the police finally raid the cramped hideout of an ‘Ndrangheta boss, in the heart of the Calabrian countryside. Once inside, what they find is not the criminal, but rather a small plastic statue of the Virgin Mary, crying tears of real human blood.

Tensione superficiale is the working title of the feature debut by Giovanni Aloi, a young Italian director who took part in Berlinale Talents in 2016 and who participated in Horizons at the Venice Film Festival the year before with his French-produced short E.T.E.R.N.I.TTensione superficiale is being produced by Sardinian outfit Ombre Rosse Film Production in co-production with France’s Chic Films. The film tells the story of a young Italian mother who gets by as a prostitute in Austria, a fact she keeps hidden from her friends and family.

A number of South Tyrolese productions have also received backing. They are: Crescendo (working title) by Marcus O Rosenmüller, staged by FilmVergnügen in co-production with Germany; The Valley (Das Tal) (working title) by Nuno Escudeiro, produced by Miramonte Film in co-production with France, a project helmed by a team of young talents who graduated from the ZeLIG School for Documentary, Television and New Media in Bolzano; and the documentary Boscaioli per Rodi (Holzfäller für Rhodos) (working title), directed by Luis Walter, who is also producing together with Marco Sonna. In addition, Re_Public (working title), the new doc by South Tyrolese director Andreas Pichler, staged by Miramonte Film, has been backed at the pre-production stage.

Among the Austrian projects currently in production and being financed by IDM is a doc by Gerald Salmina on the life of South Tyrol’s very own Hans Kammerlander, a controversial figure who is nevertheless one of the living legends of mountaineering. Manaslu – Berg der Seelen [+see also:
