The 13th FEST – New Directors, New Films Festival came to an end yesterday with a Czech film and a Belarusian title scooping the gathering’s two main prizes. The Golden Lynx for Best Fiction Feature went to Filthy [+see also:

 by Tereza Nvotová. Previously seen in competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam this year, the drama focuses on a 17-year-old teenager who is raped by her teacher and is trying to overcome her trauma. The Golden Lynx for Best Documentary Feature went to The Road Movie by Dmitrii Kalashnikov, an observational documentary made using video footage from several dashboard cameras installed by Russian drivers in their cars. The idea was originally to prevent potential conflicts, but the outcome is rather different.

Silver Lynxes were handed to the short films from across the festival’s various sections – and European talent was omnipresent. The Polish short Apocalypse by Justyna Mytnik won in the Experimental section, while Belgium also made a splash, with three of its productions winning in the Fiction, Documentary and Animation Short categories – respectively, Downside Up by Peter GhesquièreHomeland by Sam Peeters and Antarctica by Jeroen Ceulebrouck.

The Portuguese Grand Prix went to Maria sem Pecado by Mário Macedo, whereas João Lourenço’s Um Refúgio Azul and Tiago Amorim’s 78.4 Rádio Plutão got Honorary Mentions. The NEXXT section, organised in partnership with various international film schools, crowned the Hungarian title Bond by Judit Wunder.

Besides the screenings and awards, this year’s FEST once again proved it is a top-quality event when it comes to the parallel Training Ground section, which promotes the intergenerational exchange of experiences, giving film students and young professionals the opportunity to attend master classes led by actor Nuno LopesMelissa LeoAllan Starski and Edward Lachman, among others.
