MK2 becomes the third-largest movie-theatre operator in Spain

French group MK2 is continuing its expansion in Spain. Following the purchase of Cine/Sur cinemas in Andalusia, Toledo and Badajoz in 2014, now the Cines Dreams Palacio de Hielo, the most-visited establishment in Madrid (930,000 admissions in 2016 for its 15 screens and 4,200 seats), has wound up in the pocket of the MK2 network.

This acquisition allows the leading independent French cinema group, the current market leader in Andalusia, to become the third-largest exhibitor in Spain, boasting ten cinemas, 128 screens and five million viewers per year. All in all, MK2 now has 22 cinemas, 196 screens and is nearing a combined total of ten million admissions in France and Spain.

Interestingly, the MK2 Cine/Sur network hosts the Seville International Film Festival in its theatres, organises more than 7,000 screenings of films in the original language and has launched cycles for children, in addition to other cycles revolving around art and spreading knowledge. It also publishes its own cinema and cultural magazine (similar to France’s Trois Couleurs, printed in 50,000 copies every month, and distributed in theatres and cultural spaces).

Founded in 1974 by Marin Karmitz and currently helmed by his son Nathanaël, MK2 is also active in the domains of co-production and international sales (see the news).
