Final preparations are underway for filming on Guerilla, the debut feature by György Mór Kárpáti, which kicks off on 21 August in the area surrounding Budapest. Highly acclaimed for his short films of the likes of Provincia (discovered in the Cinéfondation selection at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014) and Forest (shown in competition at Berlin in 2011), the filmmaker is throwing himself into a reinterpretation of the period film, immersing us in natural scenery with a minimalist style in order to capture the spirit of youth in 1849. The cast features Gergely Váradi (who cut his teeth in feature films), Blanka Mészáros (who appeared in Brazilians this year), and Benett Vilmányi (who rose to prominence in The Seventh Circle).

Written by the director, the screenplay takes us back to 1849, and the end of the war of independence in Hungary. After going into hiding to avoid being conscripted, Barnabás sets off in search of his brother, who’s fighting in a guerrilla group. Trapped in the forest, the rebels see his injured brother as a hero, even though he’s an inexperienced fighter who has yet to prove that he’s not afraid. While Barnabás does his best to integrate himself into this militant community, he gets caught up in a love triangle, and starts an affair with a young girl who his brother also loves. And in combat, he starts playing an increasingly active role in the cruelty...

According to the director’s note sent to Cineuropa, the film presents the world of underground warfare through the story of two brothers and a love triangle. We see the daily lives of this guerrilla group, made up of young people in their teens and twenties, living deep in the forest in the chaotic times of a revolution cut short. The film tries to draw similarities between the revolutionaries of the past and the feelings of young people today.

Produced by Viktória Petrányi for Proton Cinema, Guerilla is being supported by the Hungarian National Film Fund. Filming will take place between 21 August and the end of September in the forests near Budapest.
