Written by the director, the story is a loose adaptation of an episode recounted in Jacques the Fatalist and His Master by Denis Diderot (published in 1796), namely the "Tale of Madame de la Pommeraye and the Marquis of Les Arcis", in which a widow who has been left by her lover wreaks revenge by flinging him into the arms of a courtesan.

Produced by Frédéric Niedermayer (who has staged all of Mouret’s features) for Moby Dick Films, Mademoiselle de Joncquières will be co-produced by Arte France Cinéma. Supported by the CNC’s advance on receipts and the Ile-de-France and Pays-de-la-Loire region, the film will be shot from 28 August-20 October, with three weeks in the vicinity of Le Mans and five in Paris. The French distribution will be handled by Pyramide, while the international sales have been entrusted to Indie Sales.
