No secrets for Berlinale Talents 2018

- The official announcement of the 250 Talents set to take part in the next edition of the Berlinale's initiative has now been made

No secrets for Berlinale Talents 2018

UPDATE (8 January 2018): Today, Berlinale Talents revealed the identities of all of its 250 up-and-coming and promising professionals (read more here) along with the 40 feature, documentary and short film projects that will participate in the Project Labs (read more here). Hailing from 81 different countries and with an almost perfectly balanced selection between women (128) and men (122), the talents will have a chance to engage with one another as well as industry representatives and the audience at the Berlinale while exploring the opportunities that the festival offers over a period of six days (17-22 February 2018).

For its 16th edition, Berlinale Talents invites everyone to dive into the depths of the “secrets” of cinema and the film industry by unveiling them through various points of view. The leading summit and networking platform has already selected its 250 participants from almost 3,200 applications, who will be invited to attend the 68th Berlin International Film Festival from 17-22 February 2018. The names of the professionals covering all the fields of film production and industry, including directing, producing, acting, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, production design, score composition, sound design, film criticism, and sales and distribution, will be announced shortly on Berlinale Talents’ official website.

Behind the idea of “Secrets,” which is this year’s theme, Florian Weghorn, Berlinale Talents Programme Manager explains: “We have nothing to hide: for everyone who comes to Berlinale Talents, open collaboration generates a special sense of community. But films are also mysterious, because they reveal and conceal everything at the same time. We are fascinated by the magic of the hidden and the secret bonds between creators, a film work and the audience.”

The 250 international Talents will have a chance to exchange their secrets with over a hundred established experts, mentors and festival guests, who through a series of workshops, parallel networking events, talks and films screenings, will be able to share their own personal knowledge and hopefully their own secrets to success in one of the most demanding industries. Furthermore, political and social issues will be openly discussed and will address feedback from a wider audience, with 25 of the talks also due to be open to the public. As is the case every year, Berlinale Talents 2018 takes place at the three HAU Hebbel am Ufer theatres which are situated extremely close to Berlinale’s headquarters.

The Berlinale Talents Project Labs will also be one of the focal specialised points of this edition, with the already established Script Station, one of the most popular script development labs in the world, the Short Film Station and the Doc Station. Journalists and film critics will have the opportunity to cover the 68th Berlinale through the Talent Press, while sales agents and distributors will be part of the Talent Project Market that is organised in collaboration the with Berlinale Co-Production Market and will be offered direct access to the European Film Market (read the news here).

It is worth noting that for Berlinale Talents 2018, there has been a 15% increase in applications compared to last year (2,711 applications), coming from 133 countries. Nineteen Berlinale Talents alumni were also nominated at the European Film Awards in various categories.
