Based in the city of Norrköping, Swedish collective Crazy Pictures is already very well known in its home country thanks to a series of online short films that went viral immediately, under the title Poetry for Fishes. Their shorts were characterised by their mixture of humour and satire, although for their first feature film, the team chose a different path. Den blomstertid nu kommer (lit. “Now the Time of Blossoming Arrives”) – whose title derives from a traditional summertime hymn – will be a disaster-thriller with dark elements and some extreme special effects.

Set in the post-apocalyptic near future, Sweden is under attack by an unknown force. In the midst of the chaos, Alex (Christoffer Nordenrot) is forced to return to his home town in order to reconcile with his estranged father. He will also try to reunite with his girlfriend from his youth, Anna (Lisa Henni), as they try to save themselves and survive until the emergence of what may become a new Sweden. Apart from the leading duo, the cast also includes Jesper Barkselius, Pia Halvorsen, Magnus Sundberg and Krister Kern.

Den blomstertid nu kommer has been co-created by the whole collective, although Victor Danell is credited as the director, and he also co-wrote the script along with the protagonist, Christoffer Nordenrot. Crazy Pictures has been developing the film since 2015, when its crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter started, which also became one of the biggest ever in Sweden, raising close to SEK 800,000 (€81,000). With a total budget of SEK 18.5 million (€1.9 million), most of which will finance the special effects, the film wrapped shooting last year and is currently in the final stages of post-production, as it will include 330 CGI effects. Post is set to be completed by the spring.

Regarding the expectations the team has for Den blomstertid nu kommer, Olle Tholén, producer at Crazy Pictures, underlines: “The ambition has always been to create a spectacular and uncompromising Swedish film that we would like to see in the cinema ourselves.” Danell adds, “I cannot describe my feelings; it's going to be so big at the cinema – something we've dreamed about.”

Apart from the financial aid received from the fans, Den blomstertid nu kommer has been supported by the local Norrköping Film Fund, and is being co-produced by Crazy Pictures with Film i Väst. The release in Sweden is set for mid-summer 2018, and it will be distributed by SF Studios.
