The story is a contemporary take on the novel by Iberian writer Ignacio Martinez de Pinson and Poirier’s is the second film adaptation, after Emilio Martinez Lazaro’s 1997 version. Poirier also moved the storyline forwards from 1930s Spain to the present day and the west coast of France. Filming began on 12 May and lasted a total of nine weeks.
Sergi Lopez is considered Poirier’s "pet" actor and he first came to the forefront of popularity in France after winning a César (the French equivalent of the Oscar) Harry, un ami qui vous veut du bien by Kevin Miranda.
Chemins de traverse is scheduled to go into post-production in January 2004 and the release date will be announced further down the line.
