, the 5th full-length feature of Italian-Argentine filmmaker Gaspar Noé, will be unveiled at the 50th edition of the Directors’ Fortnight, taking place from 9 to 19 May 2018 as part of the 71st Cannes Film Festival.

It would have been more of a shock to not encounter a Gaspar Noé film in Cannes, given that the director has presented all of his full-length films here to date (often thrilling and dividing his audience simultaneously): I Stand Alone (which won the Critics’ Week Grand Prize in 1998), Irréversible (in competition in 2002), Enter the Void [+see also:

(selected within the Midnight Screening section in 2015).

Climax is Noé’s first French-language film since Irréversible and is set in the mid-90s, according to information uncovered by The Playlist. The storyline, also the work of the director, focuses on a group of around twenty young street dance enthusiasts. They come together for a 3-day boot camp in an abandoned boarding school in the thick of a forest. They finish their final group dance, then set about celebrating their last night, gathered around a big bowl of sangria. In no time at all, the atmosphere becomes electric, and a strange madness overcomes them as the night progresses. It’s clear that they’ve been drugged, but they don’t know why or by whom. In time, transfixed by the hypnotic and increasingly electric rhythm of the music, they struggle to restrain their neuroses and psychoses… Some of them feel they’re floating in a heavenly paradise; most, however, are plunged into the deepest depths of hell…

Produced by Edouard Weil and Alice Girard forRectangle Productions, Climax is co-produced by Arte France Cinéma, Wild Bunch (responsible for distribution in France, but also heading up international sales), Les Cinémas de la Zone and the Belgian contingent at Artémis Productions. Also worth mentioning is the work of talented Belgian director of photography, Benoît Debie, in this film.
