SAN SEBASTIÁN 2003 France

French gems at the festival

by

Rivette, Chabrol, Ozon, Chéreau..., the most prestigious names in French production will be appearing on the programme for the 51st edition of the San Sebastian Festival, which is taking place in the Basque city from September 18 to 27.

The latest film by Jacques Rivette, L’histoire de Marie et Julien starring Emmanuelle Béart, which had first been confirmed for Cannes, and then for Venice, will now be in competition at San Sebastian. In this film, the director has come back to his muse after their work together on The Beautiful Troublemaker. It’s a French/Italian production (80/20 percent) by Pierre Grise Productions and Cinemaundici, and has a budget of Euro 3.48m, including an anticipation on box office receipts provided by CNC, France’s National Film Centre and participation by Arte France Cinéma.
Out of the 16 works selected for the competition there’s also the French-Spanish production Dans le rouge du couchant by Edgardo Cozarinsky, starring the Spanish actress Marisa Paredes and the Frenchman Bruno Putzulu. It’s about a series of characters who meet in Paris, all of whom have links with Buenos Aires. The film is produced for the French company Les Films d'Ici by Serge Lalou and co-produced by the Spanish firm, Mallerich Films.
