Hungarian wins Best Short Film

by

- Martin Scorsese´s jury gives Short Palme to Hungary´s Péter Mészáros for Esó Után

Esó Után, Péter Mészáros´ sad story of a woman who escapes from her violent companion on a bicycle convinced Scorsese´s jury that it was the best of the bunch of 11 short films presented this year. Mészáros shot the film sparingly and brought it together in the editing room. His excellent use of background noise and a sombre musical score created just the right dark and desperate atmosphere of incumbent gloom for this 4 ½ minute film.
The Jury Prize was shared between Canadian Jesse Rosensweet´s animated short about cloning gone crazy, The Stone of Folly, and Indian Manish Jha´s chilling A Very Very Silent Film, a silent look at the commonplace but no less shocking vision of death on the streets of India.
