A glance at History

- Angelopoulos returns to the cinema with the first of a trilogy in which he narrates the history of his country

Theo Angelopoulos is once again behind the movie camera following a four-year absence. He left the movie-making scene after having walked off with the Golden Palm in 1998 in Cannes for L´eternità è un giorno, the odyssey of an ailing, elderly writer and a boy in search of love and the meaning of life. The film was written in collaboration with Tonino Guerra. With To Livadi Pou Dakrizi (The Weeping Meadow) Angelopoulos continues this history of his homeland and, in picking up the threads of his trilogy made between 1972 and 1977, is now portraying Greece as it was between the 20th and 21st centuries through the lives of his two protagonists. Angelopoulos is shooting this film, the first of a trilogy, entirely within the natural reserve of Lake Kerkini. The action takes place between 1919 and the arrival of the Red Army in Odessa, and closes in 1949 with the end of the Civil War.
