Cinédiversité, an initiative of the Cicae (International Confederation of the art cinema theatres) supported by the European Union Media Programme , aims at promoting quality cinema, especially in France, Germany, and Italy. This project, started in 2004, is about to take off thanks to two of the three films the Cicae distinguished last year during several festivals (Locarno, Panorama and Forum sections in Berlin, ‘Quinzaine des réalisateurs’ in Cannes, Orrizonti in Venice, San Sebastian...): the anglo-irish feature film Omagh by Pete Travis, and the Italian film La Spettatrice by Paolo Franchi.

The Cicae, based in Paris and presided by Pierre Todeschini, gathers 3000 independant screens. 950 theatres in France, 450 in Germany, and 500 in Italy, are members. Their owners benefit from the regular screenings organised for the programme Cinédiversité, and receive from the Cicae copies of the films as well as promotional material. Under the direction of Enrico Chiesa, this programme allows young directors, especially young European directors, to be distributed and emerge. Thus, Pete Travis’ Omagh, which shall be released in France of the 23d of March (Haut et Court Distribution) won a prize for the Best script in San Sebastian and the Discovery Award in Toronto (2004). The film has been on the screen in Ireland and Great-Britain since the 27th of May 2004, the Italian public is about to discover it (Minervais distributing it), and its release in the Netherlands is scheduled for the 5th of May.

Paolo Franchi’s La Spettatrice (produced by Emme Produzioni and Ubu Films) is another promising film. It won the Cicae Prize and the award for the Best Actress (Barbara Bobulova) at the last Italian Film Festival in Annecy. The Luce Institute managed to release it in Italy on the 7th of May 2004. Bodega will soon start distributing it in France.
We shall also point out that the Cicae gave prizes in Berlin : in the Panorama section, it distinguished Ultranova by Bouli Lanners (Belgium) and in the Forum section, the French and Israeli coproduction Odessa Odessa by Michale Boganim was granted the prize.
