Only the Night on a starting-block

by

Depending on whether or not it will be selected for the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, Only the Night (La belle image), Xavier Giannoli’s second feature, starring Ludivine Sagnier, Nicolas Duvauchelle, and Bruno Todeschini, will be released either in June or in Autumn (Mars Distribution ). This film, produced by Edouard Weil for Rectangle Productions, recounts the adventures of Julien and Gabrielle. The former (played by Nicolas Duvauchelle) moves to Paris with Cécile, but they hardly see each other, for Julien spends his nights viewing movies at the cinema club. One night, in front of his building, he meets a shabby-looking sleepwalking woman (Ludivine Sagnier), follows her a little and then loses her. Later that week, he comes accross her on the street, and she seems completely different, well-dressed and relaxed, in the company of a little boy and an older man. He longs to see her again, and he will...The script was written by the director and by Jacques Fieschi (Nelly & Monsieur Arnaud, Un cœur en hiver(1992), Les destinées sentimentales).

Only the Night (which was initially called a totally different name and had a totally different cast) was shot last summer in France and Belgium with a €3.8M budget. Its coproducers are Michel de Wouters Production (Belgium), Roissy Films (France), and Arte France Cinéma (300,000 euros). The film is thus 78% French and 22% Belgian. The rights have been bought in advance by Canal + and CinéCinéma. Studio Canal which handles international sales has already brought a promo-reel to Berlin. It has already been decided that the film will be distributed in the UK by Momentum Pictures.
Xavier Giannoli, born in 1972, has already won a Palme d’Or in Cannes in 1998 for the short film L’Interview, and great acclaim for his first full-length feature, Les Corps Impatients (2002), starring Laura Smet and, again, Nicolas Duvauchelle.
