Incautos: How a grifter's world can collapse

by

Screening in competition in the FestCEAL, Miguel Bardem's Incautos brought to the Belgian audience the story of three experienced grifters and a young man who has spent his life learning how to become one.
Ernesto Alterio, Federico Luppi and Victoria Abril (manuals say there should always be a femme fatale in a crime story) star in a film that questions the thin line between loyalty and crime among those who cheat on people with elegance and wit. The script – written by the director and Carlos Martín - opts for a comic register, showing great respect for its characters by presenting them in a charming and exciting manner, even when they are about to commit the most heinous crimes. The greatest achievement of Bardem’s 7th feature film is that he does not appear to pass moral judgements.

In a story told in flashback, combining different perspectives and private fears, the editing by Ivan Aledo gives the script a peculiar rhythm. After an amazing beginning, the film slows down, gaining a darker tone towards the end. Fascinated by the narrative techniques of thrillers, the several final twists and reversals show us what we already suspected from the start: in the grifters world, when it comes to big business, nothing is what it seems.

Produced by Francisco Ramos for Alquimia Cinema, Incautos gained three Goya nominations: Best editing (Ivan Aledo), Best Original Song (Bebe Rebolledo) and Best Sound (Pierre Lorrain, Jaime Fernández, Polo Aledo). International sales are managed by Latido Films.
