EUROPEAN FILMS AWARDS Nominations

Haneke heads list with some surprises

The European Film Academy - EFA) yesterday officially announced the nominations for the 2005 edition at the closing of the Seville Film Festival. More than 1500 members voted for the cream of European cinema and the Award, following on from Barcelona in 2004, will this year be handed over at Berlin on the 3rd of December, celebrating the European film industry.

from Austrian Michael Haneke is ahead, represented in almost all the categories, with two French actors, Juliette Binoche and Daniel Auteuil nominated in their respective categories. As for the Cannes Palme d’or for 2005, the Dardennes brothers have been rewarded for the powerful performance from Jérémie Renier with one nomination. Three other films stand out, with multiple nominations, My Summer of Love [+see also:

from former documentary maker Pawel Pawlikowski, who won the Alexander Korda Prize at the recent Bafta Awards for Best British Film; the second feature from Danish Suzanne Bier Brother and the film from Rumanian Cristi Puiu, The Death of Monsieur Lazarescu [+see also:

applauded by all the critics.

was only chosen in three categories (best photography, design and music), as well as Audrey Tautou for the category best Actress, Bruno Delbonnel for photography, Hervé Schneid for editing and Alice Bonetto for design and the four nominations from the European blockbuster by Jean-Pierre Jeunet A Very Long Engagement.
