INSTITUTIONS France

A cascade of appointments

by

The main institutions responsible for the destiny of French cinema have made several changes to their management in recent weeks. Following the two-year appointment on February 7 of Laurent Heynemann as head of the commission of selective support for video publishing, the general manager of the National Film Centre (CNC), Véronique Cayla reappointed Claude Durand for a one-year term as president of the commission of advance on receipts (selective support for production), while also approving the entry of new members.

The commission that evaluates the first feature films eligible for the aforementioned advance will now be directed by producer Marie Masmonteil (Elzevir Films), who will be assisted by fellow producer Grégoire Sorlat (Why Not Productions), directors Rachid Bouchareb, Bruno Nuytten and Claire Simon, actress Lubna Azabal, journalist Claire Clouzot and novelist Pascal Lainé. Taking over at the second commission, which examines the requirements of more experienced directors, is producer Bruno Pesery (Arena Films), along with his colleague Serge Lalou (Les Films d'Ici), director Raphaël Nadjari, actors Melvil Poupaud and Pascal Légitimus, illustrator and filmmaker Marjane Satrapi, festival director Prune Engler and critic Michel Crépu.

At Unifrance, president Margaret Menegoz has appointed John Kochman (the "number two" in international sales at Studio Canal) as director of Unifrance USA to replace Catherine Verret-Vimont. Also worth mentioning is the good news for the body in charge of overseeing the promotion of French cinema internationally, with yesterday's announcement of the signing of a patronage contract with Société Générale Private Banking. This contract will provide Unifrance with additional financing to promote French cinema internationally.
