Women filmmakers in the spotlight

140 films by female directors from 30 countries are on the bill for the 28th Women’s Film Festival, which kicked-off today in Créteil, not far from Paris. With this year’s theme, Utopias, the Créteil festival has also programmed a full retrospective on Austrian documentary-maker Ruth Beckermann and a tribute to actress Jane Birkin.

Along with a documentary competition that includes representatives from Sweden (Lina Makboul), Holland (Marjoleine Boonstra), Germany (Mirjam Kubescha and Frauke Sandig), France (Chantal Briet, Vanessa Springora and Caroline Martel) and the UK (Lizzie Thynne), the festival also offers a section entitled Europe in Short (15 humorous short films by women) and a debate entitled "Cinema in Europe," which will be held on Thursday, March 16.
