Set in a marvellous forest, in fifth century France at the time of the Druids, the film portrays the amorous adventures of the shepherd Céladon (Gillet) and the beautiful Astrée (de Crayencour). Fooled by a suitor and convinced that Céladon has been unfaithful, Astrée dismisses the young man, who attempts to drown himself. She thinks he is dead, but he has been secretly rescued by nymphs.

Faithful to the promise he made to Astrée to never appear before her again, Céladon does all in his power to make himself known to her without breaking his oath, going as far as disguising himself as a woman to be near the one he so dearly loves, fighting against his rivals and resisting the attraction of nymphs.

Produced by Jean-Michel Rey and Philippe Liégeois for Rezo Films and La Compagnie Eric Rohmer , Les Amours d'Astrée et de Céladon is a co-production between Spain’s Alta Films Producción and Italy’s BIM Distribuzione (15% each). The feature also received Eurimages funding of €330,000, as well as €350,000 in advances on receipts from the Centre National de la Cinématographie (CNC).

Shooting, which began in France’s Auvergne region, is currently taking place near Blois, in the Loire Valley, and is scheduled for completion mid-July. Rezo Films, who are handling international sales, will distribute the film in France in 2007, although the release date will depend on the film’s selection at a major international festival, with a race against the clock already on for the 2006 Venice Film Festival.
