A Belgian at the Résidence

Presided over by Cambodian director Rithy Panh – previous presidents include Bruno Dumont, Claire Denis, Olivier Assayas, Pascale Ferran, Costa Gavras and André Delvaux – the jury of the Cannes Festival Résidence yesterday revealed the six lucky participants who have been chosen to live in the Résidence, from October 2006 through February 2007, where they will have the opportunity to develop their films and benefit from privileged support and meetings organised with experienced professional filmmakers.

The participants include only one European director, Fien Troch, a recent member of the Brussels European Film Festival jury. The director’s debut feature Someone's Else Happiness [+see also:

at the 2006 Premiers Plans Festival in Angers.

Troch has revealed to Cineuropa that her upcoming project will be distinctly different from her previous ensemble film, although it will deal with the same themes about couples and family (see interview).

Except for Iran’s Babak Jalali, the remaining directors are mostly from North and South America and include Natacha Feola and Antonio Campos (first prize in the Cinéfondation 2005 selection), Chilean director Sebastian Campos, whose debut feature The Sacred Family competed at the San Sebastian Festival and Argentina’s Alexis Dos Santos who presented Glu in competition at this year’s Rotterdam Film Festival.
