Floating cinema in Brussels

by

Director of the two Brussels cinemas (Actor’s Studio and Styx), Claude Diouri has started a new, and slightly unusual, project. He plans to open a cinema on the water called the "Actor's Boat". The four-screen cinema complex (210, 120, 110 and 80 seats) will be housed on board a 80m by 8m barge along the quay of the canal running through the city.

The main objective of the project is to "compensate for the lack of arthouse theatres and to counter the invasion of big US productions," explains Diouri. Designed in such as way as to host other cultural activities (dance, theatre and art exhibits) and by offering other services (bar and reception hall), the theatre’s originality should encourage the public to discover the usual programming in the Diouri theatres: small-scale productions, European and arthouse cinema and the like.

Supported by the City of Brussels, Brussels Capital Region, Brussels Port and designed by Belgian comic strip artist François Schuiten (the "Cités obscures" cycle), the total budget has been estimated at €1m.
