[...] Rossi Stuart's sober direction, an excellent screenplay and fine acting across the board make for a wholly convincing portrayal of the perils of family life.

sidesteps melodrama by going for a basically realistic context. Pic marks a fest-worthy but sometimes scattershot directing debut by popular Italian thesp Kim Rossi Stuart who, supported by an excellent cast, also makes few concessions to stardom in his role as a violent father.

[...] Local auds have picked up on a resemblance between Rossi Stuart's good-looking, bearded father, prone to singing in the car with his kids, and Nanni Moretti's various incarnations as a jovial parent. But pic's real model is Vittorio De Sica's 1944 classic, The Children Are Watching Us. Like actor-director De Sica, Rossi Stuart views an egotistical, insensitive adult world through the eyes of a lonely little boy.

[...] Young Alessandro Morace adds a rare grace to this vulnerable role that spirits the film through a number of narrative quagmires.

, Italian actor Kim Rossi Stuart’s directorial debut, restates the child’s eye-view of family strife with such emotional truth that it feels fresh.

The film spends little time trying to look pretty, and its kitchen-sink aesthetics, together with its deliberately untouristy view of suburban Rome, will confine it to the arthouse. But within this niche it looks to stir foreign as well as domestic interest.

[...] Some will find the film’s dramatic arc a little muddy. But it’s Rossi Stuart’s commitment to his young hero-narrator, rather than the demands of classic script structure, that make this such a convincing and affecting debut.

Parmi ceux-ci, Anche libero va bene [+see also:
