Appeal from directors and producers: "Barbera at the head of RAI Cinema"

In an open letter addressed to the heads of RAI, a substantial group of directors, producers, actors and screenwriters is backing the nomination of Alberto Barbera as the head of RAI Cinema, a key state point of reference for the production and distribution of Italian cinema.

The position of CEO at RAI Cinema is currently being covered by Giancarlo Leone, who several months ago became vice-general manager of RAI, after Carlo Macchitella resigned due to his involvement in the investigation into the Mediaset slush funds related to the company’s television rights. Macchitella’s name emerged from a Swiss Letter Rogatory in the Milan courts, as well as that of Daniele Lorenzano, a defendant in the trial in progress along with Silvio Berlusconi.

The name of Barbera, the former director of the Venice Film Festival and current director of the Turin Film Museum, had already surfaced in recent days. "We feel that Barbera’s professional history displays morality, authoritativeness and passion for Italian cinema" wrote, among others, Marco Bellocchio, Bernardo Bertolucci, Cristina Comencini, Sergio Castellitto, Alessandro D'Alatri, Ferzan Ozpetek, Gabriele Muccino, Giovanni Veronesi, Michele Placido, Gabriele Salvatores, Marco Tullio Giordana, Carlo Verdone, Paolo Sorrentino, Dino Risi and Francesco Rosi.
