Two edgy new films hit sets

Two new films begin shooting this week in the UK. The first is Donkey Punch, the debut feature by Olly Blackburn, who co-wrote the screenplay with David Bloom.

The film is also the first on the slate of new production company Warp X – a new digital low-budget feature film scheme backed by the UK Film Council, Film4, Screen Yorkshire, EM Media and Optimum Releasing – which plans to make a total of seven films in the next two years.

Donkey Punch tells the story of a hedonistic weekend in Spain that takes a fatal turn as the fun and games between a group of young people on a yacht leads to an accidental death and a desperate fight for survival.

The project will shoot for four weeks in Cape Town, with backing from partners Do Productions. It will be sold internationally by Lumina Film and distributed domestically by Optimum.

The second title to go into production is Clubbed. Funded through the EIS scheme with support from Screen West Midlands, it will shoot in London's Three Mills Studio and on location in the West Midlands.

Adapted by BAFTA-winning writer Geoff Thompson from his best-selling autobiography Watch My Back, the coming-of-age story follows factory worker Danny as he becomes involved in the violent "rude-boy" subculture of 1980s Coventry and its Northern Soul and Ska music clubs.

Clubbed is directed by Neil Thompson, produced by Martin Carr and will be scored by M-People's Paul Heard. The cast includes Colin Salmon (Tomorrow Never Dies), Shaun Parkes (Notes on a Scandal [+see also:

), Ronnie Fox (Nil By Mouth) and Nikki Sanderson (Coronation Street) in her feature film debut.

Clubbed is scheduled to be released early 2008.
