While some improvements remain to be made, the 10th Diagonale Austrian Film Festival (March 19-25) in Graz was an overall success.

According to provisional figures announced at the closing press conference by festival director Oliver Testor and his accountant Birgit Flos, the number of filmgoers who attended the festival was 24,600 this year, up from 23,000 in 2006.

An impressive 18,000 tickets were sold at regular price for 180 screenings, 28 of which were sold out. In total, admissions were up almost 60%. The total number of accreditations also rose – 1,100, up from 200 in 2006.

However, some complaints were made regarding ticket prices. Filmgoers in receipt of social benefits considered the reduced rate of €6 as still too high.

Meanwhile, 300 tickets were sold as part of the Hunger for Art and Culture initiative which, according to Flos, is not about focusing on the theme of poverty but rather creating a feeling of enthusiasm for cinema. Nevertheless, there is still progress to be made in this area.
