Scorsese to hold master class

by

After Agnès Varda, Wong Kar Wai, Nanni Moretti, Oliver Stone, Stephen Frears, Ousmane Sembene and Sydney Pollack last year, it is now Martin Scorsese’s turn. The recent Oscar-winning US director will hold a master class for film lovers on May 24 at the Cannes Film Festival (May 16-27).

The director will use the occasion to officially launch his World Cinema Foundation, which aims to preserve and restore cinema works from the world over. He will also attend the closing ceremony of what will be the 60th edition of the festival, to present the Caméra d'Or for the best film from all sections.

Selected four times in official competition at Cannes, Scorsese competed with Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore in 1975, Taxi Driver in 1976 (Palme d’Or), The King of Comedy in 1983 and After Hours in 1986 (Best Director).

He was jury president at the 1998 festival, where he presented Greek filmmaker Theo Angelopoulos with the Palme d’Or for Eternity and a Day and the Grand Jury Prize to Italy’s Roberto Benigni for Life is Beautiful.

In 2002, Scorsese also presided over the Cannes Shorts jury and the Cinéfondation.
