Chickens face tough return

This week's new releases sees the return of the German audience's favourite "wild chickens" in Die wilden Hühner und die Liebe (lit. "The Wild Chickens and Love"), which faces stiff competition from five US new releases, Turkish film Beynelmilel, one German/US co-production and an Italian title.

– the eighth most seen German film in 2006 (over 1.1m admissions) – distributor Constantin has teamed up once again with producers Peter Zenk and Uschi Reich (among the most popular German children's film producers at present) to release the second instalment in the hit series.

The Bavaria production – adapted from the novels by German writer Cornelia Funke – was directed by Vivian Naefe and scripted by Reich.

In their latest adventures, the five young chickens get their first taste of romance, while also studying A Midsummer's Night Dream.

Meanwhile, 3L is releasing Bruce Beresford's US thriller The Contract, a German co-production on a family outing that goes wrong when a serial killer turns up. Morgan Freeman and John Cusack star.

The only other European release on German screens this week is Leonardo Pieraccioni's Italian comedy Ti amo in tutte le lingue del mondo (lit. "I Love You in Every Language"), about a love triangle between a physical education teacher, a 16 year-old pupil and an attractive female veterinary surgeon (dist. Azur Film).
