Dresden beats own record from get-go

The 19th Dresden International Short Film Festival (April 17-22) has scarcely begun but has already beaten a record: no less than 366 shorts will screen this year at the Metropolis cinema, 61 of which will have their international premiere.

Among the pleasant surprises of the programme are the screening of the work of Anna Henckel-Donnersmarck (cousin of Florian), parallel sections dealing with such themes as life in big cities (including Paris and London), British shorts (the British Focus section is celebrating its 10th anniversary) and a Trash Night regrouping not-so-tasteful films.

(The article continues below - Commercial information)

The parallel programmes also feature unseen East German commercials, which boasted the virtues of Socialism while selling fish and foot cream.

The Dresden festival has chosen over a hundred commercials from the 5,500 made in East Germany between 1946 and 1975 (after which all advertising-related spending was banned).
