CANNES 2007 Un Certain Regard

The Red Balloon to open sidebar

Three features have been added to the Cannes Film Festival (May 16-27) Un Certain Regard (see article) line-up, bringing the total number of films to 20, nine of which are feature debuts.

The latest arrivals are opening film The Red Balloon by Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao Hsien (see article), Swedish director Roy Andersson’s You, the Living [+see also:

A 100% French production starring Juliette Binoche, Hsiao Hsien’s The Red Balloon was initiated by Margo films (who also have a feature in Midnight Screenings, Olivier Assayas’ Boarding Gate [+see also:

) and was made to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

Sold internationally by Films Distribution, the €2.6m title received €400,000 in funding from ARTE France Cinéma (€150,000 in pre-sales and €250,000 in co-production), €390,000 from the Ile de France region and pre-sales from Canal+ and Ciné Cinéma.

Festival organisers have also announced an Official Competition screening on May 25 of Mehdi Charef’s Cartouches Gauloises (a €1.99m KG Productions film with pre-sales by Canal+ and Ciné Cinéma, which is being handled internationally by Pathé) during an evening devoted to Algeria, as well the presentation of the documentary Young Yakusa by France’s Jean-Pierre Limosin (productions and international sales by Celluloid Dreams) in the Special Screenings section.
