Vinterberg and French Noir
- The director of Festen has been captured by the dark atmosphere created by the French novelists, Boileau and Narcejac and is bringing one of their novels to the cinema
Famous French detective novelists, Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac,
continue to inspire films. Danish director Thomas Vinterberg has just
bought the rights to «Maldonne». Written in 1962, the novel tells of the
misadventures of a musician who takes the place of a Nazi in order to grab
an inheritance, but winds up in a deathtrap. The story has already been
brought to the screen in 1968, by Italian director, Sergio Gobbi.
The strange and disturbing universe of Boileau and Narcejac has long
fascinated filmmakers such as, Clouzot, who made Diabolique and Hitchcock
who made, Vertigo. It is now up to the director of Festen to add a
touch of Dogma '95 to the threatening atmosphere created by these two
novelists.
