Duska to open 2007 Netherlands Film Festival

Duska to open 2007 Netherlands Film Festival

The 27th edition of the Netherlands Film Festival (NFF) will open on September 26 with the premiere of Duska, the latest work by Dutch veteran director Jos Stelling, it was announced yesterday.

Duska is billed as the tragicomic tale of an over-the-hill film critic (Gene Bervoets) who is in love with an unreachable cashier at the local cinema (Sylvia Hoeks) and whose life is turned upside down by the arrival of the Russian title character (Sergey Makovetskiy).

The film was produced by Eyeworks Egmond Film in co-production with Jos Stelling Films, TV-Indie Film Production and local broadcasting organisation NPS. Benelux Film Distributors will release the film commercially in the Netherlands on October 4.

As usual, the NFF will showcase this year’s local productions. The films in competition will vie for the Golden Calf prizes, the Dutch film industry’s highest honour. Stelling already has four Golden Calves to his name, with the late Bert Haanstra, to whom a retrospective is dedicated this year, also a past winner.

Highly anticipated autumn titles that could compete include Erik de Bruyn’s desperate career woman drama Nadine; the romantic ensemble comedy Alles is liefde by director Joram Lürsen (In Orange) and the new film by Simon director Eddy Terstal, a kaleidoscopic tale about love and sex called Sextet.

The children’s film Waar is het paard van Sinterklaas?, a follow-up to the extremely successful Het paard van Sinterklaas, has already been confirmed for a September 30 premiere. The NFF will run between September 26 and October 6.
