Up against three US, one Australian and one Canadian title – most of which are horror films, including Tarantino’s latest, Death Proof – this week European cinema is putting up a good fight, with the same amount of new releases.

German filmgoers can choose between two local titles. After 2005’s All Alone, television director Bernd Böhlich has now made Du bist nicht allein [+see also:

film profile] ("You Are Not Alone"), a dramatic comedy with social themes consisting of a charming array of minor characters trying their luck at a new life: a unemployed man who falls in love with his neighbour at the doctor’s and his actress wife (Herbert Knaup and Karoline Eichhorn), who don’t let difficulties get them down.

The film is on release through Neue Visionen and also stars Katharina Thalbach.

Salzgeber is distributing the documentary Max Ernst - Mein Vagabundieren - Meine Unruhe, a prize-winning film made in 1991 by Oscar-nominated director Peter Schamoni for the 100th anniversary of the birth of the famous Dadaist.

Also out today is German/UK/US co-production Death at a Funeral [+see also:

film profile], a comedy by Frank Oz (dist. Concorde).

Meanwhile, Arsenal is releasing Pierre Jolivet’s French title Could This Be Love? [+see also:

film profile], an unlikely love story between a businessman (Vincent Lindon) and an artist (Sandrine Bonnaire).

Switzerland is represented by Heinz Bütler’s documentary Ferdinand Hodler - Das Herz ist mein Auge (“Ferdinand Hodler: The Heart is My Eye”), the most comprehensive portrait ever made of the Swiss artist known for inventing a style of symbolism called Parallelism (dist. Film Kino Text).
