Love, adventure and “cinema of the real”
New titles hitting German screens include two interesting US films - Robert Redford’s Lions for Lambs (distributed by 20th Century Fox) and the French co-production lauded at Cannes 2005 The Three Burials by Tommy Lee Jones (distributed by Salzgeber) - as well as several impressive domestic titles.

film profile], the directorial debut by actress Maria Schrader (Aimee and Jaguar, Rosenstrasse) that screened out of competition a fortnight ago at the RomeFilmFest (see news), tells the story of a scholar in Jerusalem who has a degrading love affair with an older man, a friend of her parents. The film is distributed by X Verleih.
Young viewers will at last be able to watch the adventures of three detectives from the US cult novel series now over 40 years old: The Three Investigators and the Secret of Skeleton Island) by Florian Baxmeyer (30), whose short film The Red Jacket won an Oscar nomination in 2004. In his latest film, which presented a legal (in the negotiation of rights) and financial challenge (the budget exceeded €11m) as well as a test of creative stamina, the heroes Justus, Peter and Bob are forced to interrupt their holidays in South Africa to investigate what is causing so much alarm at an amusement park under construction on an island off Cape Town. The film is distributed by Walt Disney.
The other three German releases are documentaries. Ich will dich – Begegnungen mit Hilde Domin, a highly personal work by Anna Ditges about the life of a grand old lady of German literature who lived through German history of the previous century, is distributed by Film Kino Text. GMfilms releases Mein Tod ist nicht dein Tod, an autobiographical work by Lars Barthel, the East German director who here retraces his love affair with and marriage to an Indian woman who has since died, while b-ware!media is launching Wolfgang Reinke’s Nicht böse sein!.
