Angers festival looks eastwards again

Eastern European films take pride of place among the prize winners at the 20th edition of the Premiers Plans Film Festival in Angers.

The jury presided by actress-director Sandrine Bonnaire – and comprising Jorge Semprún, Frédéric Fonteyne, Mia Hansen-Love and Djamshed Usmonov – awarded its Grand Prize to the Russian film Simple Things by Alexei Popogrebsky. The film also picked up the prize for Best Male Newcomer.

by Polish director Andrzej Jakimowski (see interview) also scooped double honours, receiving the Audience Award and the Special Jury Prize. Unveiled at Venice Days 2007 (see Special Report) and winner of the Europa Cinemas Label Award, the film will be released in Dutch theatres on April 17.

The award for Musical Creation went to Ulo Krigul for Veiko Õunpuu’s Estonian feature Autumn Ball [+see also:

(Grand Prize in the Horizons section at the Venice Film Festival, see Special Report) and Ceci Schmitz-Chuh was crowned Best Female Newcomer for her performance in Pia Marais’ German title The Unpolished [+see also:

Finally, the Screenplay Reading Award went to Philippe Van Leeuw’s La Vacillante (“The Wavering Woman”, Les Films du Mogho production).
