Gaumont’s international sales team (led by Loic Trocmé) will get to work at the film market of the 61st Cannes Film Festival (May 14-25) on an enticing project: Karim Dridi’s Le dernier vol de Lancaster (“Lancaster’s Last Flight”), starring Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard (currently filming Michael Mann’s Public Enemies alongside Johnny Depp) and Guillaume Canet (whose latest film Un simple espion is in post-production).

(2003), the two actors – who are also a couple in real life – will be on set together in the autumn.

Adapted from Sylvain Estibal’s eponymous novel, Le dernier vol de Lancaster is set in 1933 in the Sahara desert where Bill Lancaster’s plane crashes as he is attempting to break the solo flight record from London to Cape Town. Chubbie Miller, Bill’s fiancée, begins a race against time and makes every effort to locate the plane. Meanwhile, the pilot tries to survive despite the burning heat, freezing cold nights, thirst and fever.

This dramatic film will be Dridi’s sixth cinematic feature after Pigalle (1994 Venice Film Festival), Bye-Bye (Un Certain Regard, Cannes 1995), Foul Play (Locarno competition, 1998), Rage (Panorama, Berlin 2003) and Khamsa (set for release in June 2008).

At Cannes, Gaumont will also unveil the world premiere of its production JVCD by Mabrouk el Mechri, featuring a self-mocking Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Market screenings will also include two titles starring Daniel Auteuil: the comedy 15 ans et demi (“15 and a Half”) and the thriller MR 73. The line-up is completed by Sean Ellis’ The Broken; Vincenzo Natali’s Splice which is in post-production and stars Adrian Brody and Sarah Polley; and the 3-D animated film Rock the Boat by Fabien Suarez and André Bessy, currently in production.
