Focus Features acquire worldwide rights to Agora

by

US giant Focus Features International announced at the recent Cannes Film Market that they have acquired the worldwide rights (except for Spain and the US) to Agora, the new work by Alejandro Amenábar.

The director’s second English-language feature after The Others (2001) will thus have an excellent springboard in terms of its exhibition. The acquisition also demonstrates the film industry’s interest in the new production by the Spanish filmmaker who won an Oscar in 2005 for The Sea Inside [+see also:

Moreover, Focus’ name is associated with another promising Spanish title tipped for future success, as the company will also act as international sales agent for Broken Embraces, Pedro Almodóvar’s eagerly-awaited new film (see news).

Amenábar and producer Fernando Bovaira, as well as Telecinco, Mod Producciones and Himenóptero (the director’s company) are working hard on preparations for Agora, which will be set in ancient Egypt. They have recruited a technical and artistic team made up of some of the most distinguished professionals in the film industry, including the UK’s Guy Dyas (production designer on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), Spanish DoP Xavi Giménez (The Machinist [+see also:

), Italian costume designer Gabriella Pescucci (Oscar for The Age of Innocence), and scriptwriter Mateo Gil, for whom this is his fourth collaboration with Amenábar, after Thesis, Open Your Eyes and The Sea Inside.

However, it will be some time before the release of Agora, which is still being filmed. Shooting began on March 17 and will last until the end of June on the island of Malta (see news).
