German Film Festival prize winners

The fourth edition of the German Film Festival – which was held in Ludwigshafen from June 5-15 – has announced its prize winners.

The Best Film Award (worth €50,000) went to Dominik Graf (director of the acclaimed The Red Cockatoo [+see also:

) for The Vow. Produced by Colonia Media and set in the early 19th century, the film tells the story of the encounter between a nun who bears Christ’s stigmata on her body and a young writer who wants to record her words.

The jury awarded two special mentions to Sylke Enders’ Mondkalb [+see also:

(Beaglefilms) and Niels Laupert’s Seven Days Sunday [+see also:

(Bartl Laupert Dierbach Filmproduktion). The Audience Award was shared by Tamara Staudt’s Nur ein Sommer [+see also:

and Buket Alakus’ Finnischer Tango.

Actors Nina Hoss and Devid Striesow also received honorary awards.

On the festival’s closing day, renowned filmmaker Volker Schlöndorff presented and discussed his film Ulzhan [+see also:

A total of 22,000 viewers attended this "major summer festival of German film" and over 3,000 people took part in the film discussions.

The interest shown in the event confirms festival director Michael Kötz’s belief that it has practically become "an institution of popular education in the field of film".
