The new face of Quinzaine

by

There’s to be a new direction for Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, section of the Cannes Film Festival. The announcement was made by the French director, Pascal Thomas, who’s the president of the Directors’ Society (SRF). He also announced that the director of the Quinzaine, Marie-Pierre Macia, put forward in 1998 to replace Henri-Pierre Deleau, has been dismissed. Thomas said the criteria which the SRF will use as guidelines for the next festival, will be re-examined. The idea is to rediscover the spirit of research which drove the group of filmmakers 30 years ago, and to bring back the role of the “instigator of ideas”. The management committee will nominate a new director in the next few weeks. The Quinzaine has contributed to the discovery of authors like Wim Wenders, Ken Loach, Louis Malle and André Techiné. But it’s unique status has been challenged over the course of the last twenty years, first with the addition of the official, but non-competitive section “Un certain regard” which was set up in ’78, and then with the “Cinéfondation” aimed at young filmmakers. The group of directors which makes up the SRF appears to be determined to re-conquer the spirit of former times, a philosophy which was confirmed by Thomas “to re-discover the characteristic capacity of the Quinzaine to amaze, ensuring a new a even bigger space for directors”.
