Twelve Spanish (co-)productions hit Toronto
A total of 12 Spanish (co-)productions will be presented at the Toronto International Film Festival, whose 33rd edition kicks off today. In the last 10 years, every winner of the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar has screened first at Toronto.
Spanish films are particularly well represented in the ‘Contemporary World Cinema section, which will screen José Luis Cuerda’s The Blind Sunflowers, starring Javier Cámara and Maribel Verdú.
Also included in this section are Leonardo de Armas’s debut work, Radio Love; and Chus Gutiérrez’s Return to Hansala, which looks at the tragedy of immigrants who arrive by boat. Spanish co-productions The Window by Carlos Sorín, Horn of Plenty by Juan Carlos Tabío, Acné by Federico Veiroj, and El Greco (“The Greek”) by Iannis Smaragdis also feature on the line-up.
The experimental section Visions includes two films presented at Cannes: Birdsong and Liverpool. The former is an unusual reinterpretation of Jesus’ birth by Albert Serra and the latter is a family drama by Argentinean director Lisandro Alonso.
Dedicated to the most violent films, the Midnight Madness section will screen Miguel Martí’s third feature, SexyKiller, morirás por ella (“SexyKiller, You’ll Die for Her”), starring Macarena Gómez and Alejo Sauras.
A Spanish co-production, Argentinean director Daniel Burman’s latest film, Empty Nest, will also appear at Toronto.
Moreover, Spanish companies Morena Films and Telecinco Cinema will be represented by the mega-production they backed: Steven Soderbergh’s Che [+see also:

film profile], which stars Benicio del Toro and is one of the major attractions at this year’s festival.
