Record domestic grosser in the running

The Slovenian Union of Film Workers has chosen Marko Nabersnik’s Rooster's Breakfast as its submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 81st Academy Awards.

With a budget of around €1.3m, Rooster’s Breakfast is one of the most expensive Slovenian films ever made, as well as the highest-ever local grosser, with 176,807 admissions and over €700,000 in revenues. On the all-time Slovenian box office chart, only Titanic and Troy have earned more.

The film revolves around two characters, a young mechanic who starts a risky love affair with the wife of the local gangster and the mechanic's boss, whose love interest is pop megastar Severina (who appears in a cameo). These hidden passions lead to unexpected dramatic events.

Nabersnik’s film was also the big winner at the national Festival of Slovenian Film in Portoroz with five prizes, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay.

, winner of the Amnesty International Human Rights Award at this year’s Motovun Film Festival.

The Academy will announce the category’s five nominees on January 22 and the ceremony will be held February 22, 2009.
