by

The 13th edition of the Dinard English Film Festival begins today, 3 October. For four days, the French coastal resort will welcome some 16,000 visitors. This year’s main theme is comedy, with 6 films in the race to win the Golden Hitchcock award assigned by a Franco-British jury presided over by Gérard Darmon. The contenders include Gurinder Chadha’s Bend it Like Beckham, a recent winner in both Marrakech and Bordeaux.
The programme also includes the premieres of 12 films that showcase British cinema’s newfound vigour: Mike Leigh’s All or Nothing, Michael Winterbottom’s 24-Hour Party People, Peter Mullan’s The Magdalene Sisters (the winner of the Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival) and the current British box office phenomenon, The Guru by Daisy von Scherler Mayer (Euros 9 million at the box office in just five weeks).
Dinard will pay tribute to Ken Loach, who will be the festival’s very special guest, with the screening of four of his most significant films including his latest, Sweet Sixteen (the winner of the best screenplay award at Cannes 2002). This year’s novelties also a special night dedicated to comedy. There is also an interesting new section dedicated to short films called Short Channel where the British Film Council and France’s CNC (National Film Centre) worked together on selecting pairs of young British and French directors and funded their short films that will be featured therein.
