Michael Haneke gets top French honour
The French government will designate Austrian film director, Michael Haneke "Officier des Arts et des Lettres” (Officer of Arts and Literature) during a special ceremony at the French embassy in Vienna on 14 October. This honour traditionally goes to people who have made a significant contribution to spreading awareness of literature and the arts in France and abroad and there are three distinct degrees of importance : Chevalier – Knight, Officier – officer and Commandeur- Commander.
Michael Haneke has directed several French-Austrian co-productions including Code inconnu (2000) starring Juliette Binoche and the award-winning The Pianist (2001) starring Isabelle Huppert, Annie Girardo and Benoit Magimel.
