Corto Maltese takes to the sea

by

- The live action based on the first adventure of Hugo Pratt's charismatic cartoon character is a British-Canadian coproduction

Corto Maltese is back. After the highly successful French release of Pascal Morelli's live action entitled La cours secrète des arcanes, the film is headed for the UK who also produced the film with Canada. The two countries will join forces once again to produce La ballata del Mare Salato, based on Hugo Pratt's first story featuring this adventurous pirate.
The film is the 1999 brainchild of Spanish director David Carreras and English producer Patrick Hoare for three two-part films each 90 minutes long for a total of six films each budgeted at around Euros13million.
The new film will be directed by Carreras, with a screenplay by British writers Mark Street and Matthew Faulk, and is scheduled to go into production mid-2003 on location in Cuba. The cast is expected to include Viggo Mortensen as Corto, Guillaume Depardieu as Rasputin and Ben Kingsley playing both Monje and Almirante.
