Nuovi Territori

- 28 thematic slots to explore the new territories of contemporary international film

Venice 59 will celebrate the past but also the future of film with a special non-competitive section called Nuovi Territori – New Territories. Created as A Window on images by Gillo Pontecorvo in 1992 and subsequently renamed New Territories, this section is specialised in films that explore new forms of cinematographic expression and covers a number of specialist subjects. This year’s curator is Serafino Murri who selected 54 European feature, medium-length and short films. Germany will be represented by Rosa Von Praunheim’s Kühe vom Nebel geschwängert and Jürgen Reble’s Zyklop. France chose Gérard Hustache-Mathieu’s La chatte andaluse, Yann Beauvais’s Des Rives and Vincent Deslande’s short film entitled Silence. Luis Sepulveda is presenting his take on the diversity of life called Corazon Verde, a Chilean-Ispanic coproduction.
Italy will celebrate Marco Bellocchio’s love of opera by screening his Addio al passato and Giuseppe Bertolucci’s Luparella, based on Enzo Moscato’s play about the career of theatrical actress, Isa Danieli. The host country selected two independent filmmakers: Tonino De Bernardi is presenting his docudrama entitled Lei while Daniele Segre is bringing Vecchie. Sicilian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino will show the film he made under the auspices of the Venetian film workshop, Tilda Swinton. The Love Factory while Luciano Barcaroli, Carlo Hinterman, Gerardo Panichi and Daniele Villa’s colourfully named Citrullo International will present Rosy Fingered Down: a film on Terrence Malick.
The cross-pollination between different ways of filmmaking will be evident in a number of live exhibitions bringing film together with music and presented by artists from Hong Kong, France and Germany. The audience will be able to witness and actively contribute to the creative work of the director in real time.
