On Sunday 3 July, in an unveiling ceremony at the 51^st Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, and as part of the LUX Prize’s tenth anniversary, the European Parliament will announce the ten films in the 2016 Official Selection, which have been nominated for the 2016 LUX Film Prize, as well as the Audience Mention from the last edition. Out of the ten films in the Official Selection, three will be subtitled into the 24 official EU languages and travel across Europe during the LUX Film Days. 

The European Parliament is also present at Karlovy Vary IFF with a rich panel discussion programme, which is focused on the central topic of European film education. Panellists will discuss the potential of audiovisual works in schools to boost children’s creativity and critical thinking, and the current challenges that European countries face in developing millennials’ tastes for the silver screen and implementing best practices from other countries. Among the speakers are Michaela Šojdrová, vice-chair of the Committee on Culture and Education, European Parliament; Julie Ward, Committee on Culture and Education, European Parliament; Jaela Arian and Łukasz Raszewski, 28 Times Cinema; Mark Reid, BFI, European Framework for Film Education; and Nuria Fernandez, University of Barcelona, researcher, FilmED Consortium.

Since 2007, the European Parliament has awarded the LUX Prize to the best European film. The movies selected for the LUX Film Prize competition help to promote European cultural diversity and spark discussions about the main social and political issues of the day in countries from all over Europe.
